Throwing and Turning Masterclass

Join me for a two-day pottery experience at Fireworks Clay Studios in the creative heart of Cardiff. My course is designed for potters with some experience of throwing on a pottery wheel who are keen to take their throwing and turning skills to the next level. With only 2 places available on each course, you'll benefit from plenty of individual attention, support and guidance throughout each day.

What you will learn:

Day 1 Throwing with Confidence

Throughout the morning we will focus on the basics of centering, coning up and throwing straight-sided shapes using beautiful stoneware clay. In the afternoon we will move steadily onto more dynamic flared and curved forms with the aim of having a minimum of 3 completed shapes, ready for turning the next day. 

Day 2 The Art of Turning

Using the thrown pieces from day 1 we will learn the art of turning, removing any unwanted imperfections, and refining the shape and surface of the forms. Particular focus will be given to the rim and shaping of the outer foot. Finally, we will learn how to turn footrings inside the base.

You’ll leave with a minimum of three beautifully turned and finished pots — ready to take home the same day, or choose to have them fired and posted to you later (additional £15 postage, or free collection if you’re local).

Other Information

The masterclass will take place at Fireworks Clay Studios in Cardiff. The studio is an easy 5 minutes walk from Cardiff central train station and is close to the centre of town, with an abundance of restaurants, places to stay, shops and Cardiff Castle.

There is free on-street parking approx 5 minutes walk away from the studio, should you wish to drive.

About Me

I am a professional ceramic artist and trained art teacher. I studied Illustration at Wolverhampton in 1993-96. Following that I undertook a PGCE in Exeter and became an art teacher (in charge of ceramics) for 6 years, before retraining on a Masters programme in ceramics in Cardiff in 2003. I began my ceramic practice in 2004, and from 2006 - 2010 undertook a practice-based PhD, within the context of ceramics. After more than 20 years pursuing my ceramic practice I would like to share what I have learnt, and teach, albeit privately, once again.
